Chapter seventeen

Sutton Jones

Am I breathing? I don’t think I’m breathing.

I rush out of the recovery center right as practice is ending and book it toward the parking lot. I think I hear Connor call my name, but I can’t hold a conversation with him right now. It’s a miracle I even made it this long. Seeing Shaw again is not an option, I have to get out of here.

My whole body is on fire. With each person I pass on my way out, I wonder if they can see what happened written all over me. Are there marks from Shaw’s searing touch? Do my hands look different after being all over him? What about my lips? Can anyone tell how close I came to kissing Shaw with them?

I burst through the door into the icy morning. My lungs ache as I gulp the frigid air. I pull my phone out and immediately call Ariel, hoping she has time to talk.

As soon as the line clicks I blurt out, “I almost kissed Shaw. And I-I touched him when he wasn’t wearing a shirt. Oh, and I answered his call while taking a bath.” The words tumble out, jumbling together as if I tipped a box of Scrabble letters upside down.

“Okay,” Ariel says. “I’m going to need a second to process all of this.”

I nod, pacing in front of the building.

“Let’s start with this almost kiss. What happened there?”

My mind throws several memories at me all at once, making me realize how many times I’ve come close to kissing Shaw since moving here. I decide to go with the most recent one, since that’s the cause of my hyperventilation. I’ll dissect this awful pattern when I can’t sleep tonight.

“I was massaging him because I lost a bet, and then I teased him and he–” I cut myself off, pressing a hand to my stomach as butterflies erupt within me.

The way he grabbed me … it makes my mouth dry just thinking about it.

“Then he what?” Ariel sounds on the edge of her seat.

“He pulled me to him, and I swear we were about to kiss before Connor walked in.”

Ariel gasps. “Your life is so much more exciting than mine.”

“You can have my life. I do not want all of this drama. I just want a nice guy that my parents and Brock will approve of.”

“Then date Connor,” Ariel says, like it’s easy.

“Connor compared my eyes to old bricks,” I deadpan, and her laughter trickles through the phone.

“He did not.”

“Yes, yes he did. I didn’t think it got worse than being called dirt eyes in the third grade, but here we are.”

“That’s terrible. So he’s definitely a no.”

“And so is Shaw,” I tell her before she can bring him up. “He’s not nice.” Even though he paid for Ariel and my family’s tickets to that game in North Carolina. And there’s the whole hair tie thing I’m still not sure about…

“Your family loves him, though. And you clearly are attracted to him.”

I want to deny the attraction part of things, but I can’t.
